High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Northern Mozambique (Cabo Delgado, Pemba, Nampula, Niassa)
September sees the first hints of warming before the rains, with days becoming hotter and a rise in humidity toward month-end along the coast. Ocean temperatures increase, making sea activities more inviting though occasional wind squalls can still unsettle small boats offshore from Pemba. Local farmers start preparing fields for the coming rains, and rural tracks are dry and workable. Pack breathable clothing and a sunhat if you plan to visit Mozambique Island or coastal villages.
Central Mozambique & Zambezi Delta (Quelimane, Beira, Zambezi Valley, Gorongosa)
September warms gradually with the first hints of humidity returning at month end; central coastal days are hot but not oppressive, making long beach walks more pleasant. Migratory bird movements can create excellent spectacle in the shallows of the Zambezi floodplain, and boat-based excursions are increasingly regular. Road dust increases on dry tracks, so bring a buff or scarf for vehicle rides. Expect fewer fellow tourists than in the south’s busy months-good for a quieter visit.
Southern Mozambique & Maputo Province (Inhambane, Tofo, Bazaruto, Maputo, Ponta do Ouro)
September brings warming days and the first touches of humidity by month-end; the coast becomes noticeably hotter through the afternoon though nights remain comfortable. Water temperatures start to climb, and dive visibility can remain excellent before the pre-monsoon build-up. Roadside fruit markets along the Inhambane corridor pick up with seasonal harvests, enlivening village life. Pack light clothing with a breathable sunhat and keep insect repellent handy as mosquitoes increase toward the wet season.
Western Highlands & Inland Plateau (Tete, Manica, Mount Binga, Cahora Bassa)
September sees a gradual warming and the first hints of humidity as the rainy season approaches: days warm and afternoon heat builds, especially in lower valleys around Tete. Trails are dry and firm and this is a comfortable shoulder month for longer treks before the rains return. Local communities begin preparing fields for planting, and small markets become lively with produce. Expect significant diurnal temperature swings-light layers are the most useful practical garment.
Islands & Archipelagos (Quirimbas, Mozambique Island, Bazaruto & Benguerra)
September offers steadily warming days and great water clarity as the islands move toward the warmer months; snorkeling is excellent and day-trip boat services run reliably. Quirimbas’ islands are pleasant with fewer insects than in wet months, and Mozambique Island’s heritage sites are comfortably explored on foot. The shoulder season sees fewer crowds than December-January, so it’s good for quieter island experiences. Bring lightweight clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, and a waterproof camera pouch.
