Northern Mozambique (Cabo Delgado, Pemba, Nampula, Niassa)

October is the pre-monsoon heat buildup: inland areas like Niassa become noticeably hotter and more exhausted-looking as humidity climbs along the coast. If you’re island-hopping around the Quirimbas, be aware that sea conditions can change quickly as thunderstorms begin to form in late afternoons. Tourist demand is still moderate, but plan early for sail or lodge bookings in Bazaruto/Quirimbas if you want prime spots once the season turns. Mosquito presence increases as the land prepares for the wet months.

Central Mozambique & Zambezi Delta (Quelimane, Beira, Zambezi Valley, Gorongosa)

October is the pre-rain buildup: temperatures rise and late-afternoon thunderstorms begin to appear toward the end of the month, especially inland around Gorongosa. This is a useful shoulder month-trails are dry early in the month and wildlife is relatively easy to find, but plan for sudden showers later. The Zambezi Delta’s channels are navigable but will soon start to rise; boating operators begin rechecking vessels and schedules. Carry lightweight rain protection and avoid low-lying paths once the first heavy showers start.

Southern Mozambique & Maputo Province (Inhambane, Tofo, Bazaruto, Maputo, Ponta do Ouro)

October is the hot, pre-rain month: afternoons are warm and sticky and thunderstorms can begin later in the month, sometimes making short-lived coastal water choppier. Coastal lodges in Tofo and Bazaruto prepare for increased humidity and occasional heavy showers; it’s a quieter shoulder season for visitors who tolerate a little instability. Tourism operators advise flexible booking for activities reliant on calm seas. Lightweight waterproofs and quick-dry gear become more useful than in the core dry months.

Western Highlands & Inland Plateau (Tete, Manica, Mount Binga, Cahora Bassa)

October is hot and increasingly humid by late month with occasional early thunderclouds forming in the afternoons; dust gives way to the scent of green shoots as fields await the rains. Access to highland trails remains excellent until the first heavy showers, but check forecasts if planning extended hikes on Mount Binga or in Manica. Bird activity increases with the return of seasonal migrants, and the reservoir remains navigable. Bring breathable clothing and waterproof overtrousers for sudden storms.

Islands & Archipelagos (Quirimbas, Mozambique Island, Bazaruto & Benguerra)

October starts to feel hotter and slightly more humid; late-afternoon cloud build-ups can bring the first brief showers that foreshadow the coming rainy season. Bazaruto’s reefs remain diveable but operators watch runoff after heavy inland storms; island lodges begin preparing for seasonal maintenance. Quieter beaches and lower off-season rates attract flexible travelers who tolerate occasional squalls. Pack light rain protection and anti-mosquito measures as insect activity increases.
