Northern Mozambique (Cabo Delgado, Pemba, Nampula, Niassa)

June is firmly into the dry season: hot sun by day with marked cooling after sunset, especially inland on the Niassa plateau where nights can be pleasantly cool. The Quirimbas islands have calm seas and are quieter - a good time for boat trips and exploring Ibo Island’s historic fort without the summer rains. Overland roads are hard and dusty rather than muddy, easing 4x4 travel though heat and dust are considerations. Bring sun protection and water while exploring historic Nampula city.

Central Mozambique & Zambezi Delta (Quelimane, Beira, Zambezi Valley, Gorongosa)

June brings comfortable, clear conditions across the central provinces; Beira has mild, dry days and pleasant nights that are ideal for walking the waterfront or visiting Gorongosa when trails firm up. Riverside towns have fewer insects and better road access; however some secondary dirt routes may still be sandy and require high-clearance vehicles. Birding is excellent as resident and migratory species are concentrated in remaining wetlands. Pack sun protection and a light fleece for cooler night temperatures inland.

Southern Mozambique & Maputo Province (Inhambane, Tofo, Bazaruto, Maputo, Ponta do Ouro)

June is firmly in dry season with mild days and cool, sometimes chilly nights-Maputo’s evenings can fall to the mid-teens Celsius, so a sweater helps when dining outdoors. Sea conditions are calm, improving visibility for snorkelling around Bazaruto, and there are fewer mosquitoes than in summer. Wildlife viewing in nearby reserves (Maputo Special Reserve) is easier because animals gather at predictable waterholes. Expect less crowds and reliable boat schedules, but bring layers for early mornings and evenings.

Western Highlands & Inland Plateau (Tete, Manica, Mount Binga, Cahora Bassa)

June is cool and dry with daytime warmth and chilly nights on the highland edges-Tete can be pleasantly sunny while higher elevations near Mount Binga can drop to single digits at night. Dust is the main travel nuisance on unpaved tracks. Wildlife around permanent waterholes is easier to observe due to shrinking water sources, and the roads are at their most predictable. Carry sun protection for midday and a warm layer for evening campfires.

Islands & Archipelagos (Quirimbas, Mozambique Island, Bazaruto & Benguerra)

June brings idyllic island conditions-cooler mornings, warm sunny days and excellent underwater visibility in Bazaruto and around Benguerra; this is high season for diving. The Quirimbas archipelago enjoys steadier seas and kitesurfing opportunities near Pemba become very reliable. Beach lodges are quieter than the southern hemisphere peak in July/August but fully open, and boat timetables are regular. Pack a light jacket for early mornings and strong sun protection for long days afloat.
