Northern Mozambique (Cabo Delgado, Pemba, Nampula, Niassa)
April brings a noticeable drop in rainfall frequency in the far north, and mornings start to feel fresher compared with the earlier months. Pemba’s skies clear more often, making late-season diving and fishing trips more reliable; many lodges reopen or tidy up after the rains. Inland Niassa and Nampula begin to dry, improving road access for overland journeys though some long puddles remain. Temperatures are still warm by day but evenings become pleasantly cooler.
Central Mozambique & Zambezi Delta (Quelimane, Beira, Zambezi Valley, Gorongosa)
April sees a clear reduction in daily rains as the central coast transitions toward the dry season; mornings are often bright and river levels begin a slow fall. Beira’s rebuilding after the wettest months is visible in repaired bridges and cleared roads, but some rural cuts remain impassable-plan extra travel time to reach Gorongosa or the Zambezi Delta villages. Wildlife viewing improves as animals are easier to spot along receding water lines. Bring lightweight rain gear for occasional showers and a good pair of footwear for muddy paths.
Southern Mozambique & Maputo Province (Inhambane, Tofo, Bazaruto, Maputo, Ponta do Ouro)
April is a welcome transition month: rainfall diminishes and the skies clear more consistently, especially around Inhambane and the Bazaruto archipelago, improving snorkeling visibility. The southern marine season becomes more reliable for boat trips, and coastal roads firm up-Bilene and Ponta do Ouro are easier to reach by road. Daytime temperatures remain warm while nights cool pleasantly, making evening dining outdoors in Maputo comfortable. Bring sun protection and a light jacket for seaside breezes at dusk.
Western Highlands & Inland Plateau (Tete, Manica, Mount Binga, Cahora Bassa)
April presents a transition as rainfall declines and trails begin to firm up, improving access to highland viewpoints and wildlife areas. The air clears on many days, offering good long-distance vistas from Manica peaks and around Tete, and fishing on Cahora Bassa becomes more predictable. Mosquito pressure eases but doesn’t disappear entirely. Pack layers for cool mornings and a rainproof just-in-case option for isolated showers early in the month.
Islands & Archipelagos (Quirimbas, Mozambique Island, Bazaruto & Benguerra)
April brings more reliable weather for the islands with reduced rainfall and calmer seas-Bazaruto’s water clarity improves and operators resume more consistent dive and snorkel schedules. Quieter beaches make it a pleasant shoulder-season choice, with warm days and cooler evenings that are comfortable for seaside meals. Sea transfers are generally dependable though single-day weather flips still happen-keep flexible travel plans. Pack layers for evening breezes and waterproofs for the odd shower.
