Northern Mozambique (Cabo Delgado, Pemba, Nampula, Niassa)

Late wet-season rains continue into March, though some years show a gradual easing by month end; Be prepared for occasional disruptive tropical systems that have historically affected the northern coast. Niassa Reserve’s tracks can become impassable after prolonged downpours, disrupting safaris and transfers; flights to less accessible airstrips are the usual workaround. The humid heat doesn’t relent - choose light fabrics and avoid midday exertion in Pemba and around Lake Niassa. If you’re island-bound, note that sea conditions can be rough and ferry schedules change.

Central Mozambique & Zambezi Delta (Quelimane, Beira, Zambezi Valley, Gorongosa)

March still sits in the wet-season window but rainfall commonly begins to taper in some years; however the season’s tail can include damaging storms so caution is required around Beira and Quelimane. Water levels remain high through March, creating broad floodplain landscapes that are spectacular for boat safaris in the Zambezi and for migratory birds. Road conditions improve sporadically between storms; domestic flights to remote airstrips are a reliable fallback. Expect humidity, heavy vegetation, and frequent insect activity-long sleeves at dusk are recommended.

Southern Mozambique & Maputo Province (Inhambane, Tofo, Bazaruto, Maputo, Ponta do Ouro)

March can still bring heavy rain but shows a gradual shift toward fewer storms as the month progresses; beach resorts begin scheduling repairs and maintenance after peak summer. Road access to Bazaruto and island transfers can be unpredictable during early March, but by late March clearer weather windows appear for diving trips. Maputo’s markets are lively despite showers and the city is often more navigable between storms. Carry quick-drying clothes and arrange sea transfers with reputable operators who track weather closely.

Western Highlands & Inland Plateau (Tete, Manica, Mount Binga, Cahora Bassa)

March often sees the heavy fall-off start but still brings significant rain in parts of the plateau-rivers remain high and some tracks remain soft and rutted. Cahora Bassa remains full and is dramatic for landscape photography, though boat operators watch wind and inflows carefully. Daytime temperatures are warm; evenings are humid and warmish rather than cool. If you’re trekking Mount Binga expect muddy approaches and slippery granite slabs-good boots are a must.

Islands & Archipelagos (Quirimbas, Mozambique Island, Bazaruto & Benguerra)

March may still be unsettled but typically shows a slow improvement as some years head toward the drier half of the year; island operations begin preparing for a return of regular trips between the archipelagos. When the sea calms between systems, short boat excursions and diving can resume-the timing of those windows varies, so book operators with contingency plans. Beaches are quieter and lodges may offer off-season rates; expect strong humidity and occasional stormy afternoons. Protective covers for gear are essential.
