Northern Mozambique (Cabo Delgado, Pemba, Nampula, Niassa)
Cooler, dry trade winds start arriving in May and the northern coast becomes more comfortable - humidity eases and Pemba is popular for kite-surfing as winds stabilize. Inland reserves dry out, concentrating wildlife near permanent waterholes in Niassa, which makes game-spotting easier though still remote. Expect clearer skies for island snorkeling around the Quirimbas, with better visibility than during the wet months. Pack a light windlayer for evenings and early mornings if you head inland.
Central Mozambique & Zambezi Delta (Quelimane, Beira, Zambezi Valley, Gorongosa)
By May the central corridor is distinctly drier and cooler, and dust replaces the wet-season smell: Quelimane and the Zambezi floodplains are accessible for overland travel and birding. Days are warm and sunny while nights become noticeably cooler, especially inland around the Zambezi valley, so pack a warm layer for evening campfires. Drier roads make access to rural homesteads and Gorongosa lodges straightforward, and this is a preferred window for safaris and inland exploration. The risk of mosquitoes drops but remains-malaria precautions still apply.
Southern Mozambique & Maputo Province (Inhambane, Tofo, Bazaruto, Maputo, Ponta do Ouro)
May marks the start of the dry, cooler season and is one of the best months for southern beaches - Bazaruto and Tofo have clearer seas and stable weather ideal for diving and whale-watching excursions. Inland in Maputo province, mornings are crisp and humidity drops; this is a pleasant window for walking Maputo’s urban avenues and coastal trails. Tourist numbers are moderate so booking is still straightforward for island lodges. Pack sunblock, a hat, and a light fleece for cooler nights on the coast.
Western Highlands & Inland Plateau (Tete, Manica, Mount Binga, Cahora Bassa)
May moves well into drier conditions with crisp mornings and warm, sunny days across the inland plateau; this is a prime time for overland travel and boat excursions on Cahora Bassa. Nights begin to feel cool-bring a warm jacket if camping or staying in unheated lodges. Road surfaces firm up for long drives between Beira or Tete and inland towns, making self-drive easier than during the wet months. The landscape is green but drying, offering comfortable trekking conditions.
Islands & Archipelagos (Quirimbas, Mozambique Island, Bazaruto & Benguerra)
May marks the beginning of the best period for island activities: clear, calm seas and lower humidity make snorkelling in Bazaruto and diving on offshore reefs more rewarding. Quirimbas islands become pleasantly warm with steady winds that suit sailing and kite activities around Ibo. Tourist numbers are lower than peak months yet services are fully operational, so it’s a good time for marine excursions and photography. Bring sun protection, reef-safe sunscreen and light layers for windy evenings.
