Northern Mozambique (Cabo Delgado, Pemba, Nampula, Niassa)
By February the same humid heat lingers but storms can intensify; this is within Mozambique’s cyclone season so keep an eye on forecasts if you’re in Pemba or the Lake Niassa shore. Heavy rains can swell rivers around Nampula and make access to remote villages unpredictable; travel insurance and flexible plans are advisable. Birding and forest trekking are lush - but expect muddy trails in places such as the forests inland from Nampula town. Secure waterproof bags for cameras and plan morning activities when rain is less frequent.
Central Mozambique & Zambezi Delta (Quelimane, Beira, Zambezi Valley, Gorongosa)
February often brings the highest risk of intense tropical rain events and occasional cyclones, with Beira historically vulnerable to destructive systems; plan conservatively for travel and check local advisories. River flooding in the Zambezi Delta and Sofala province is common and can disrupt boat transport and road crossings, so guided transfers are safer than independent driving. Gorongosa’s trails can be very muddy but wildlife viewing remains excellent as animals congregate on remaining dry ground. Travelers should carry cash and spare days for schedule changes-this is not ideal for strict itineraries.
Southern Mozambique & Maputo Province (Inhambane, Tofo, Bazaruto, Maputo, Ponta do Ouro)
February remains hot and wet and is within the cyclone-prone window-Bazaruto and Inhambane can see bouts of intense rain and rough seas that disrupt boat services between the islands and mainland. Maputo experiences sultry, sticky nights and heavy showers that occasionally flash-flood low-lying neighbourhoods. Despite the weather, the deep-water marine life along the southern coast can be active; however, divers should confirm vessel schedules and insurance against cancellation. Flexible itineraries and waterproof gear are advisable.
Western Highlands & Inland Plateau (Tete, Manica, Mount Binga, Cahora Bassa)
February continues with wet, sultry conditions inland and is also within the cyclone window when systems can bring extreme rainfall to the highlands and the reservoir catchment. Road washouts can isolate remote communities; overland transfers on dirt roads to towns like Tete are often slower and require 4x4 vehicles. Visibility from ridgelines around Chimanimani/Manica can be poor in persistent cloud, reducing views but producing lush green scenery. Have flexible plans and ensure vehicles are well-equipped for rain.
Islands & Archipelagos (Quirimbas, Mozambique Island, Bazaruto & Benguerra)
February remains in the peak wet/cyclone season with a tangible risk of strong storms-Quirimbas and Bazaruto operators monitor forecasts closely and will cancel crossings during adverse conditions. Water visibility is generally poor after heavy rains and sea swells can suspend dive trips; this month is the least reliable for marine activities. On Mozambique Island (Ilha de Moçambique) heavy showers can flood narrow streets, so allow buffer days for transfers. Bring insect repellant and waterproof seals for cameras and electronics.
