Caspian Coast (Türkmenbaşy & Awaza)

May is mild and often the best month for the coast: the sea is warming, winds moderate, and Awaza begins to feel alive without the full heat of summer. Migratory birds use coastal marshes, so birdwatchers will find good activity around Türkmenbaşy. Expect more day-trippers and bring a hat and sunscreen for sunny seaside afternoons.

Kopet Dag Foothills & Ashgabat

May is often ideal in the Kopet Dag: warm days and cool nights, with the mountain slopes at their greenest before summer dryness sets in. Trekking routes toward the higher passes open fully and picnic spots outside Ashgabat become lively. Pack a hat and light layers-the UV is strong, and evening temperatures drop noticeably.

Central Karakum Desert & Darvaza (Gas Crater)

May kicks off the real heat build-up; midday temperatures climb and the desert begins to feel relentless by late afternoon. Darvaza is striking at night, but daytime sightseeing near Mary or the old caravan routes requires water, shade and early starts. If visiting then, schedule driving for before 10am and after 5pm, and bring sun protection and extra water.

Oases & Amu Darya Valley (Mary & Merv)

May shows the first signs of serious heat build-up; midday sun becomes strong while mornings stay pleasant, ideal for sunrise visits to Merv. Cotton fields and orchards are active, and rural roads are busy with harvest preparation. Carry water and a hat, and avoid strenuous mid-day walking among ruins when shade is minimal.
