Caspian Coast (Türkmenbaşy & Awaza)
Early spring brings a noticeable clearing of the sky; March days are crisp and often sunny, with strong breezes that sweep the mudflats near the port. Awaza’s development is quiet before peak season, so archaeological day trips from Türkmenbaşy are easier to book. Layers are useful: sun at noon, chill by sunset, and occasional fog in the mornings.
Kopet Dag Foothills & Ashgabat
March is the month’s energy: early spring thaws in foothills bring the first green after a long dry winter, and Nowruz (spring festivals around the 21st) livens towns and villages. Nisa’s archaeological ruins and roadside orchards show early blossoms; the Kopet Dag trails become passable and pleasant for short treks. Expect variable weather-sunny spells interrupted by cool, windy bursts-so dress in layers.
Central Karakum Desert & Darvaza (Gas Crater)
By March the desert begins to thaw and late-winter dust storms lessen; daytime warmth returns and desert scrub shows a short burst of green in places. Darvaza is more accessible as ground thaws and roads improve, and the changing light is excellent for photography. Pack sun protection for daytime and an insulating layer for surprisingly cold nights.
Oases & Amu Darya Valley (Mary & Merv)
March is lively with green returning across irrigated plots and Nowruz celebrations giving towns a festive air; early spring is one of the best times to see Merv and surrounding oases. Temperatures are mild and walking between ruins is pleasant without summer heat. Expect increased local travel during the holiday and pack a light jacket for cool mornings.
