Tórshavn City
Capital city of the Faroe Islands
On Streymoy's sheltered harbour, Tórshavn serves Tinganes' red, turf-roofed houses, seafood shacks, ferry links to cliff walks and puffin colonies - a compact base for hikes, Faroese music and local knitwear stalls.
Why Visit Tórshavn?#
Experience Faroese island life from a compact capital where Tinganes’ narrow lanes and painted wooden houses meet a lively harborfront. Local gastronomy ranges from seafood and ræst kjøt (fermented mutton) to inventive Nordic-style menus at small restaurants, and the Faroese chain dance and seasonal festivals highlight strong cultural roots. Day hikes into nearby hills and birdwatching add raw nature to the town’s maritime charm.

Short, gloomy days with strong winds and frequent rain; dramatic coastal scenery, good for cozy cafés and the Faroes’ moodier, photographic moments-less ideal for outdoor treks.

Tórshavn is reached through Vágar Airport (FAE) or by ferry (Smyril Line). The airport-to-city bus is the usual arrival transfer; ferries connect the Islands with Denmark and Iceland on set schedules.
Vágar Airport (FAE): The Faroe Islands’ only airport serving Tórshavn is Vágar. Regular buses tie the airport to Tórshavn (see below); the bus journey takes about 45-60 minutes depending on connections - single fares are roughly DKK 60-90 for the airport bus (buy on board or check local operators).
(Ferry option - Smyril Line/Norröna): International sea connections exist via Smyril Line (MS Norröna). The route from Hirtshals (Denmark) to Tórshavn takes around 36-40 hours; fares vary by season and cabin type (book early - passenger-only fares start from several hundred DKK upwards).
Train: There are no train services in the Faroe Islands.
Bus: Public buses (operated by Strandfaraskip Landsins and local operators) link Tórshavn with Vágar Airport and other islands. Urban buses in Tórshavn are limited but efficient for short hops; expect single fares in the range of DKK 20-40 depending on route and distance.
