Viðoy is an island in the Faroe Islands archipelago, administered as part of the Norðoyar region. The island is characterised by steep coastal cliffs, rugged terrain and a narrow footprint typical of the northern Faroes.
The coastline and upland slopes offer opportunities for coastal walking, birdwatching and views across the surrounding sea to neighbouring islands. Settlement is sparse and the island retains a largely rural, maritime character.
The island has been inhabited since the Norse and medieval periods and today consists of small villages and scattered farms linked by local roads and ferry or causeway connections to other islands in the Norðoyar group.
Viðoy lies among the northern group of Faroese islands, facing the Norwegian Sea and forming part of the island cluster administratively grouped as Norðoyar.
Tips for Visiting Viðoy #
- Base yourself in the village of Viðareiði to access the island's best viewpoints-this settlement sits on Viðoy and is the gateway to nearby cliffs such as Enniberg.
- Visit in clear weather (summer or stable forecast windows) for long-distance views; the dramatic sea cliffs are often obscured by fog and low cloud.
- Check local ferry and road schedules before you travel-services to the northern islands are infrequent and weather-dependent, so plan connections and daylight for walks.
