Hestur
Island Small Faroe Island with seabird cliffs
A short ferry from Tórshavn, Hestur offers steep cliffs, nesting seabirds, and sheep-grazed slopes; hikers follow coastal paths to tiny villages while photographers favour low light on rocky coastlines.
How to Get to Hestur #
Hestur is a small island off the west coast of Streymoy in the Faroe Islands and is reached by sea. Regular car-and-passenger ferries operated by the Faroese public company (Strandfaraskip Landsins) sail between Streymoy (the ferry port at Gamlarætt, serving Tórshavn) and Hestur; check the Strandfaraskip Landsins timetable for departures. Once you arrive at Hestur’s harbour the island is small and can be explored on foot or by bicycle.
Tips for Visiting Hestur #
- Plan visits in late spring-summer when ferry services and landing conditions are most reliable and seabirds are active; weather can make crossings difficult outside that season.
- Check the official Faroese ferry (Strandfaraskip Landsins) timetable before you go and allow extra time for weather-related changes - Hestur has limited, scheduled connections rather than frequent service.
- When on the island, head to the bird-cliff and coastal viewpoints rather than staying only in the small village; these are the main attractions and are reached on short walks from the harbour, so factor tide/wind into timing.
Best Time to Visit Hestur #
Visit Hestur in late spring to summer for the most reliable boat access, milder weather and active birdlife.
