A small island west of Streymoy in the Faroes, Koltur has abandoned settlements, grassy slopes and sheep pastures; visitors arrive by boat for short hikes, seabird observation and a sense of remote island life.
Koltur is a small island in the Faroe Islands, lying west of Streymoy and forming part of the archipelago’s inner island group. It is sparsely populated and noted for its pastoral landscape.
Koltur has long been used for grazing and small-scale farming by Faroese communities; population levels have been low for much of the 20th and 21st centuries and ownership and land use have been managed through local community arrangements.
Koltur sits off the west coast of Streymoy in the central Faroe Islands, reachable by boat from nearby villages on Streymoy and within the broader island cluster administered from Tórshavn.
