Northern Desert & Nile Valley (Wadi Halfa, Dongola, Meroe)

By September the northern desert finally begins a slow cooling trend though afternoons remain very hot and dusty; nights warm but are less sharp. Visibility improves compared with midsummer and early archaeological season activity resumes, but expect that summer heat has baked out many amenities in smaller towns - fuel and supplies can be patchy. This is a transition month: pack for heat during the day and lighter layers for slightly cooler evenings.

The Khartoum & Central Nile Corridor (Khartoum, Omdurman, Wad Medani, Gezira)

September maintains a humid, rainy feel in the southern reaches as the wet season tapers; crops mature and the landscape starts reverting to drier tones later in the month. Khartoum becomes more comfortable as heavy storms diminish, though expect occasional squalls. Travel conditions improve slowly-roads clear but some bridges and tracks may remain damaged until repairs.

Kordofan & Darfur (El Obeid, El Fasher, Nyala, Jebel Marra)

September sees the rains tapering off and roads beginning the slow process of drying out; Nyala and El Fasher show fields of new growth and the valley streams calm. Travel becomes steadily easier through the month though potholes and damaged tracks persist. The cooler, fresher air and reduced dust make September a fine month for overland exploration if you allow extra time between stops.

Blue Nile, South Kordofan & the Southern Agricultural Belt (Damazin, Sennar, Roseires)

September sees the rains tapering but river levels stay high; the countryside remains green and harvest activity starts to pick up. Road access improves gradually and crossings that were impassable begin to reopen; boat travel on the Blue Nile is still very scenic. Carry waterproof gear for sporadic showers and allow extra time for journeys as repairs continue on damaged routes.

Red Sea Coast & Eastern Highlands (Port Sudan, Suakin, Kassala, Red Sea Hills)

September sees a gradual easing of heat; mornings and evenings become noticeably more pleasant while afternoons remain warm on both the coast and in Kassala. Diving conditions improve for surface comfort while underwater clarity remains excellent; Suakin is easier to explore on foot. This month is a transitional period-book diving slots in advance as operators ramp up again.
