Sudan in April: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Northern Desert & Nile Valley (Wadi Halfa, Dongola, Meroe)

By April the heat feels relentless across the northern valley; days commonly reach the mid to high 30s Celsius, and the sun is intense at pyramid sites and riverbanks. Haboobs (sudden dust storms) become more frequent and can delay small-plane services or make overland travel uncomfortable - early starts or late afternoons are the only comfortable windows. Lightweight, breathable clothing, a good hat and water on every outing are non-negotiable.

The Khartoum & Central Nile Corridor (Khartoum, Omdurman, Wad Medani, Gezira)

April intensifies into a very hot and dry spell-Khartoum commonly reaches the high 30s to low 40s, and northerly winds can bring dust into the city. This is one of the least comfortable months for walking tours or open-air markets; many activities shift to early mornings, indoor museums or air-conditioned venues. Travelers should expect quieter streets in the harshest afternoon heat.

Kordofan & Darfur (El Obeid, El Fasher, Nyala, Jebel Marra)

April is hot and dry across the lowlands while Jebel Marra begins to feel notably warmer at lower elevations; dust storms can sporadically reduce visibility and make overland travel unpleasant. Locals often avoid midday travel and markets slow during hottest hours, so plan activities for mornings or late afternoons. If you aim to camp, seek sheltered locations and carry extra water and sun protection.

Blue Nile, South Kordofan & the Southern Agricultural Belt (Damazin, Sennar, Roseires)

April’s heat ramps up and the first convective storms may form over the southern hills later in the month; daytime temperatures climb and humidity begins to creep upward near the Blue Nile feeders. Rivers and irrigation canals are still stable, but dusty conditions can make long drives unpleasant. This month is transitional-visit early in the day and expect potential short, energetic storms in the late afternoon.

Red Sea Coast & Eastern Highlands (Port Sudan, Suakin, Kassala, Red Sea Hills)

April brings hotter conditions inland and higher humidity along the coast; Port Sudan sees temperatures climb but the constant sea breeze keeps humidity bearable. This is a quieter shoulder season for tourism so diving operators may run limited schedules, but underwater visibility typically remains excellent. If travelling to Kassala, plan early starts for hill walks and wear sun protection.
