Sudan in December: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Northern Desert & Nile Valley (Wadi Halfa, Dongola, Meroe)

December’s dry, crisp weather is one of the most agreeable of the year in the north: clear skies, daytime warmth around 20-25°C and chilly nights that can dip into single digits in exposed desert camps. This is the high season for northern exploration and photographic trips to Meroe and the Nile’s ancient sites. Expect pleasant walking conditions by day but bring a warm jacket for night camps and early-morning starts.

The Khartoum & Central Nile Corridor (Khartoum, Omdurman, Wad Medani, Gezira)

December re-establishes crisp mornings and warm, dry days across the corridor; daytime temperatures are comfortable for walking and open-air dining along the Nile. Cultural life in Khartoum is active and river cruises are pleasant before the intense heat returns next spring. Bring a light jacket for night air along the confluence and expect busy weekends at popular Nile cafés.

Kordofan & Darfur (El Obeid, El Fasher, Nyala, Jebel Marra)

December cools further at night and delivers very pleasant days; this is the high season for overland visits around El Obeid and Darfur’s main towns. Roads on principal routes are firm and reliable, and the dust is relatively low compared with the spring build-up. Carry a warm layer for evenings at elevation, and expect easier logistics when organising longer drives.

Blue Nile, South Kordofan & the Southern Agricultural Belt (Damazin, Sennar, Roseires)

December settles into clear, dry weather with cool mornings and comfortably warm days-excellent for multi-day river travel or exploring Sennar’s countryside. The Nile corridor feels refreshed after the rains and the improved road access makes overland connections simpler. Expect fewer insects, crisp air in the mornings and good photographic light along waterways.

Red Sea Coast & Eastern Highlands (Port Sudan, Suakin, Kassala, Red Sea Hills)

December restores coolish, comfortable nights and warm sunny days along the coast and in the eastern highlands-ideal for beach activities and exploring coastal ruins. Port Sudan is breezy and pleasant, making deckside evenings enjoyable. Bring layered clothing for cooler inland evenings in Kassala’s higher spots and expect smooth logistics for coastal adventures.
