Punta Engano
Point Peninsula on Mactan Island with lighthouse and beaches
On Mactan Island near Cebu, Punta Engaño features a coastal stretch with resorts, a lighthouse and access to dive sites; visitors stay for resort facilities, day dives and Cebu’s seafood offerings.
Punta Engaño is a headland at the eastern tip of Mactan Island in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, Philippines. It is a locally important tourism area on Mactan Island noted for its coastal resorts and marine recreation.
The shoreline hosts a string of resort beaches, beach clubs and small marinas that provide access to nearby snorkel and dive sites; reef habitat begins within a few hundred metres of shore. The coastal development is concentrated along a relatively short stretch of coastline used for swimming, sunbathing and boat departures for island-hopping.
The area is part of the broader development of Mactan Island as a tourism and resort zone during the late 20th century, when hotels and beach facilities were built to serve visitors from Cebu and international arrivals. It has since remained a cluster of private resorts and public beach access points rather than a single landmark structure.
Punta Engaño sits on Mactan Island within Lapu-Lapu City, immediately across the Mactan Channel from downtown Cebu City. The headland is reachable by road via the island’s bridges and lies within the urban-tourist zone of central Cebu province.
- Access: Most visitors arrive by road from Cebu City across the two Mactan bridges; Mactan-Cebu International Airport lies on the same island and is the closest commercial airport.
- Activities: Beaches and reef flats are the main draws, with snorkel and dive sites reachable by short boat rides and many resorts lining the shore.
How to Get to Punta Engano #
Punta Engaño is on the eastern tip of Mactan Island (Lapu-Lapu City), Cebu. From downtown Cebu City drive across either the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge or Marcelo Fernan Bridge onto Mactan Island and follow the Mactan Circumferential Road east toward Lapu‑Lapu City and Punta Engaño; the drive is roughly 12-15 km from Cebu City center and typically takes 25-45 minutes depending on traffic. Mactan-Cebu International Airport on Mactan Island is closer (about a 15-25 minute drive). Taxis or ride‑hailing services (Grab) are the simplest option; there are also local jeepneys and buses along the main Mactan roads, and the turnoffs to resorts and the lighthouse are a short 5-15 minute walk from the main road stops.
Tips for Visiting Punta Engano #
- Go early in the morning to avoid Mactan/Lapu-Lapu rush-hour traffic and to find the shoreline less crowded before resort activity builds later in the day.
- Use the public access points off Punta Engaño Road rather than trying to enter private resort beaches; many visitors book short dive or snorkel trips from Mactan to reach the best reefs.
- If you want to dive or snorkel the local coral gardens, book with a reputable Mactan-based dive operator who runs short boat trips from the island rather than relying on resort-only excursions.
