Terai & Southern Plains (Chitwan, Lumbini, Biratnagar)

The monsoon usually arrives by late May in the Terai, bringing sticky humidity and heavy afternoon downpours that last into June; daytime highs remain around 30-34°C but with high humidity it feels much hotter. Rivers swell and low-lying roads can flood or turn muddy; park trails in Chitwan become slippery and jeep safaris are most reliable. Pack waterproofs, mosquito repellent and accept that some rural services and ferry crossings may be disrupted.

Kathmandu Valley & Central Hills (Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur, Nagarkot)

May heats up before the rains: daytime temperatures often climb into the high 20s-low 30s°C with rising humidity that makes the city feel sticky, particularly in Patan’s old town alleys. Occasional cloudbursts signal the coming monsoon, and mountain views can be fuzzed by haze from the plains as well as seasonal crop burning. Plan indoor museum visits for mid-afternoons and keep a light rain shell handy.

Pokhara, Annapurna & Western Hills (Pokhara, Poon Hill, Annapurna Circuit lower sections)

May grows humid and storm-prone as the monsoon approaches: heavy, brief showers begin to appear in the afternoons and the valley humidity rises, though mornings can still offer good views of the Annapurnas. Trekking becomes more challenging further up as the ground turns slick; some higher tea houses prepare for closure. Carry waterproofing for packs, expect afternoon storms, and consider finishing longer treks before the full monsoon sets in.

Mustang & Trans-Himalaya (Upper Mustang, Muktinath, Jomsom)

May warms quickly but still lacks the humidity of lower Nepal; daytime highs are comfortable for long treks and the valleys are dry, though occasional pre-monsoon winds pick up. The traditional salt trade routes and upper valley trails are busy with trekkers attempting early-season crossings before the monsoon reaches lower elevations. Bring light, breathable layers for daytime and insulating layers for cold nights at higher lodges.
