Terai & Southern Plains (Chitwan, Lumbini, Biratnagar)

Dense, cool pre-dawn fog locks over rice paddies in January and temperatures swing between chilly mornings and pleasant afternoons; daytime highs sit around 20-25°C in Chitwan while nights can fall near 5-10°C. Wildlife viewing in Chitwan National Park is excellent because animals come to rivers at daybreak, but bring a warm layer for early safari drives. Roads are dry and easy, making this one of the best months for lowland travel and temple visits in Lumbini.

Kathmandu Valley & Central Hills (Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur, Nagarkot)

Thick inversion fog and cold mornings define January in the Kathmandu Valley - daytime highs are usually 10-16°C while nights often dip near freezing in places like Nagarkot. Clear, crisp afternoons with good visibility for short valley walks are common when the haze lifts, but winter pollution can trap particulates and reduce air quality. Travelers should pack a warm jacket for dawn and dusk, and appreciate quieter temples and lower tourist crowds.

Pokhara, Annapurna & Western Hills (Pokhara, Poon Hill, Annapurna Circuit lower sections)

Clear, crisp winter mornings in January reward early risers in Pokhara with calm lake reflections and daytime temperatures around 10-15°C, though nights can be cold near higher viewpoints like Sarangkot. Low tourist numbers make for peaceful boat rides on Phewa Lake and cheaper lodgings, but trek approaches remain snowy higher up and some guesthouses in higher villages may be closed. Bring warm layers for dawn viewpoint excursions and a headlamp for early starts.

Mustang & Trans-Himalaya (Upper Mustang, Muktinath, Jomsom)

January in Mustang feels like winter in a high plateau: daytime sunshine can be strong, but nights plunge well below freezing and winds off the Tibetan plateau bite. The region’s rain-shadow means much less precipitation than lower hills, so trails are dry and dusty though some passes have deep winter snow; Muktinath may see fewer pilgrims. Pack warm, windproof layers and be prepared for cold, clear skies at altitude; winter services are limited.
