Terai & Southern Plains (Chitwan, Lumbini, Biratnagar)

By February the fog thins and the plains start to warm noticeably - daytime highs push into the low 20s-mid 20s°C around Biratnagar while nights remain cool. Migrant birds are still around, and the drier air makes jungle walks in Chitwan comfortable; pack a light jacket for mornings and evenings. Tourist numbers are modest compared with spring, so lodges near reserves are quieter and often easier to book.

Kathmandu Valley & Central Hills (Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur, Nagarkot)

February still carries winter’s cool bite but hints of spring arrive: daytime temperatures climb into the mid to high teens Celsius and rhododendron buds swell in nearby hills. Dusty, dry air makes for clear views on good days and morning smog is less persistent than in deep winter; Kathmandu’s cultural sites feel lively in the lead-up to Holi. Light layers, a warmer midweight jacket for evenings, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Pokhara, Annapurna & Western Hills (Pokhara, Poon Hill, Annapurna Circuit lower sections)

February’s longer days warm the lakeside to comfortable daytime conditions in the mid-teens Celsius and rhododendrons begin swelling on lower slopes around Ghorepani. Trails to places like Poon Hill open up and tea houses start to ramp up service, but higher passes remain snowbound and cold nights persist. Expect fewer crowds than spring peak; pack a mix of warm clothing and sturdy trekking shoes for muddy sections.

Mustang & Trans-Himalaya (Upper Mustang, Muktinath, Jomsom)

February remains cold with extended night-time freezes and crisp, clear days that make for excellent high-altitude photography; daily highs often sit near single digits Celsius in Jomsom while nights stay sharply below zero. Wind can be fierce in the Kagbeni-Lo Manthang corridor so layered insulation and trekking poles are useful. Flights to Jomsom are less reliable in winter due to strong winds, so factor in extra travel time.
