Western Lowlands (Maseru, Mafeteng)

The chill returns steadily and pre-winter frosts begin by late April in shallow valleys, making early mornings sharp and sparkling. Daytime temperatures fall back into the mid-teens Celsius; heaters are common in guest lodges. As vegetation browns, rural roads are easier to ford but become dusty - bring sunglasses and a scarf.

Northern Lowlands (Leribe, Butha-Buthe, Maputsoe)

Pre-winter evenings grow brisk and frost starts to appear in shaded hollows; daytime warmth drops into the low teens Celsius. Local cafés fill with people seeking warmth and the hospitality of the north is welcoming. If you’re driving south to the capital, expect occasional slow-moving farm vehicles as people prepare for winter.

Central Foothills and Highlands (Thaba-Tseka, Mohale’s Hoek)

Early winter brings sharp frosts and the first snow flurries on higher ridges; some remote tracks start to close at night. Daylight windows are short but clear - a good time for guided walks that return before sunset when temperatures plunge. Pack insulated layers and be prepared for early closures at smaller guesthouses.

High Maloti Mountains (Mokhotlong, Thabana Ntlenyana, Sani Pass, Afriski)

The first snows at high altitude often appear in late autumn, dusting Thabana Ntlenyana and Sani Top and warning of the approaching ski season. Daylight is still long enough for trekking lower routes, but nights require insulated sleeping gear. If you plan to drive the Sani Pass down to the Drakensberg, prepare for icy patches in the shaded cols.

Eastern Highlands and Sehlabathebe (Qacha’s Nek, Sehlabathebe National Park)

Autumn sees crisp, dry days in the highlands with cold, clear nights that reveal brilliant starfields away from electric lights. Daytime hiking is comfortable and local shepherds move stock as grass dries; roads are generally reliable. Carry warm clothing for after dusk and a map or guide, since some tracks are only faintly marked.
