Western Lowlands (Maseru, Mafeteng)

Autumn’s first weeks are comfortable and dry, with warm, sunny afternoons ideal for visiting the Thaba Bosiu monument or driving to nearby craft markets. Nights cool quickly, so layer for dinner. Road dust returns as rivers drop; if you’re photographing landscapes, this is a reliable period for clear light and long shadows.

Northern Lowlands (Leribe, Butha-Buthe, Maputsoe)

Autumn days are warm and typically windier, which dries paths and clears the air for photography across the valley. Mornings can still have a sharp edge, so pack a light fleece for dawn outings. This quieter shoulder season is good for cultural visits when hosts are less busy than during harvest peak.

Central Foothills and Highlands (Thaba-Tseka, Mohale’s Hoek)

As the landscape dries further in late autumn, highland evenings turn cold quickly and you’ll rely on fireplaces in rural lodges. Daytime outings to rock art and old colonial-era passes are pleasant, with stable weather giving dependable access. If you’re self-driving, check that your vehicle’s heating and spare tyres are in good order - services thin out away from main towns.

High Maloti Mountains (Mokhotlong, Thabana Ntlenyana, Sani Pass, Afriski)

Autumn brings sharp, cold mornings but stable weather during the day - ideal for long ridge walks and accessing remote passes. Temperatures drop quickly after sunset and the first northern lights of frost appear on tents and saddles. This season also reduces insect activity, making evenings more comfortable for campsite dining.

Eastern Highlands and Sehlabathebe (Qacha’s Nek, Sehlabathebe National Park)

Late summer moves toward drier conditions and clearer skies after the rainy season eases; mornings are cooler and visibility over the plateau improves dramatically. Fall colors are modest but the light becomes excellent for sweeping landscape shots. This is a good time to arrange guided walks into Sehlabathebe before the true cool of autumn sets in.
