Western Lowlands (Maseru, Mafeteng)

Midsummer keeps temperatures high and the storms regular; daytime highs in the low to mid-20s Celsius are common and humidity is noticeable. If you’ve booked a river trip or valley hike, check for flash-flood warnings after heavy rain. The lowlands are popular for short escapes to shaded rural guesthouses, so book ahead on long weekends.

Northern Lowlands (Leribe, Butha-Buthe, Maputsoe)

Late summer keeps the rhythm of hot afternoons and stormy evenings; rivers swell and the countryside is at its most verdant. This is a lively travel period with weekend trips to riverbanks and cave sites - book transport ahead on holiday Saturdays. Carry a strong torch for after-dark stops, as heavy rain can knock out rural lighting temporarily.

Central Foothills and Highlands (Thaba-Tseka, Mohale’s Hoek)

Late summer starts to ease off with fewer storms and a sense that the season is turning; mornings become cooler and paths dry out. Local homesteads bustle with harvest activities and roadside stalls sell fresh maize and vegetables. This is a rewarding time for cultural visits when families are harvesting and villages are active.

High Maloti Mountains (Mokhotlong, Thabana Ntlenyana, Sani Pass, Afriski)

Midsummer keeps the high Maloti pleasantly cool and green, but storm cells can produce heavy rain and hail - sudden changes are typical. Afriski is quiet at this time but the hiking routes are at their most botanically rewarding, with alpine grasses and highland birds active. Pack a good waterproof shell and sturdy gaiters to keep mud and drizzle out of boots.

Eastern Highlands and Sehlabathebe (Qacha’s Nek, Sehlabathebe National Park)

Early summer thunderstorms start to arrive and the plateau experiences the first regular rains; some narrow dirt tracks wash out in heavy downpours. The Sehlabathebe area fills with running water and small waterfalls appear along escarpments - bring waterproof footwear for visiting the main attractions. Accommodation can be busier at weekends, but trails remain peaceful on weekdays.
