Western Lowlands (Maseru, Mafeteng)

Mid-winter brings the coldest nights of the year with regular frosts and occasional sleet on the surrounding hills. Daylight hours are short and brisk; dress in warm layers and have a hat for wind off the mountains. If you’re planning transfers to higher ground, check vehicle availability - 4x4s are often required for side roads in this season.

Northern Lowlands (Leribe, Butha-Buthe, Maputsoe)

Mid-winter in the north is dominated by cold, bright days and frosty nights; snow is rare here but nearby highlands will be white. If staying in smaller guesthouses, check that heating is available - many keep only basic heating. Early morning transport can be delayed by icy conditions on hilly approaches.

Central Foothills and Highlands (Thaba-Tseka, Mohale’s Hoek)

Late winter sees the intermittent thawing of isolated slopes and an easing of extreme cold; mornings are still frosty but afternoons can be pleasantly cool. Roadside streams run clearer as spring approaches, making this a quieter but photogenic month for visiting. Bring a reliable water bottle and layered clothing - temperatures swing widely between day and night.

High Maloti Mountains (Mokhotlong, Thabana Ntlenyana, Sani Pass, Afriski)

Late winter continues to show substantial snow cover across the peaks and cold, crisp days that are excellent for summit photography. Access remains limited in places and local guides are essential for any high-altitude activity. Pack layered insulating clothing, a warm sleeping bag if camping, and check vehicle hire terms for winter driving.

Eastern Highlands and Sehlabathebe (Qacha’s Nek, Sehlabathebe National Park)

The onset of winter finds the plateau increasingly subject to frost and occasional sleet, with higher points showing snow by month’s end. Services into Qacha’s Nek and park entry roads may be intermittent; confirm bookings and transport before setting out. Strong layers, a warm hat and waterproof trousers will make a big difference to comfort when exploring the higher trails.
