High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Western Lowlands (Maseru, Mafeteng)
Early winter sets in with clear skies and cold nights; daytime warmth is mild but brief and heating in lodgings becomes necessary. Maseru sees fewer rains, so city exploration is straightforward but expect icy patches in the pre-dawn on lesser-lit streets. This is a low-crowd time for museums and businesses remain open.
Northern Lowlands (Leribe, Butha-Buthe, Maputsoe)
The first weeks of winter bring consistently dry weather and very clear skies; daytime sightseeing is comfortable but nights often drop below freezing. Travelers should be prepared for icy patches on rural roads at dawn and dusk. This is a calm time for border crossings into South Africa, with less traffic on the main routes.
Central Foothills and Highlands (Thaba-Tseka, Mohale’s Hoek)
Midsummer (in the Southern Hemisphere winter) the foothills are often at their coldest, and expecting snow at higher passes is sensible - Afriski and higher roads show the first consistent cover. Fires are lit early at lodges and transport can be slow in the mornings due to ice on shady sections. If you aim to reach cultural sites, ask locals about road conditions each morning.
High Maloti Mountains (Mokhotlong, Thabana Ntlenyana, Sani Pass, Afriski)
High winter brings consistent snowfields on the ridgelines and Afriski operates if conditions allow; expect alpine winter conditions with daytime temperatures often below freezing on the summits. Snow chains and 4x4s are commonly needed for passes and some remote lodges may be unreachable without booked transfers. This is the season for winter sports or dramatic snowy photography, not casual backcountry treks.
Eastern Highlands and Sehlabathebe (Qacha’s Nek, Sehlabathebe National Park)
Pre-winter brings the first frosts and a thinning of tourist numbers, ideal for solitude among the rock pools and basalt cliffs. Days are short and the light is low, but it’s a good period for scenic drives if you’re prepared for occasional icy patches. Check opening times for remote visitor centres - some operate reduced hours in the shoulder season.
