Western Lowlands (Maseru, Mafeteng)

The area begins to thaw and smells green as late winter gives way to spring. Fields around Mafeteng start to show new growth, and rivers fed by mountain melt pick up speed; track crossings may be muddier than they look, so waterproof boots are wise. This is a quiet shoulder season for visitors - accommodation is easier to find and roadworks, common after winter, are still being patched.

Northern Lowlands (Leribe, Butha-Buthe, Maputsoe)

Spring’s first warm spells bring quick green-ups across farmland around Maputsoe, and you’ll notice migrant birds returning to rivers. Afternoon showers emerge by mid-spring, but many days are sunny and suited to short hikes to viewpoints above Hlotse. Expect dusty roads between showers, so a water-resistant daypack and sturdy footwear are useful.

Central Foothills and Highlands (Thaba-Tseka, Mohale’s Hoek)

Spring rapidly opens the highlands; daytime warmth returns and streams begin to swell as snowmelt from the higher Maloti feeds the network of rivers. Vegetation flushes green and the landscape is excellent for trekking routes around Mohale’s Knots. Expect muddy approach tracks to remote villages - good boots and a tolerance for dust or mud will keep you comfortable.

High Maloti Mountains (Mokhotlong, Thabana Ntlenyana, Sani Pass, Afriski)

Late winter sees hard-packed snow on higher slopes and the first fully settled snowfields in hollows - glacier-free but persistent at altitude. Day hikes are possible on clearer days but proper boots and an ice-axe are recommended if venturing off-trail. Many rural passes remain closed by heavy snowdrifts; confirmation from local authorities or guides is necessary before travel.

Eastern Highlands and Sehlabathebe (Qacha’s Nek, Sehlabathebe National Park)

Midsummer (mid-winter in the Southern Hemisphere) sees settled cold on the plateau with deeper snow in sheltered hollows; access to some parts of Sehlabathebe can be restricted. Temperatures on exposed ground may stay around freezing; if you’re chasing snow scenes, this is the month but make arrangements with local guides for safe routes. Expect smaller crowds and quieter trails.
