Western Lowlands (Maseru, Mafeteng)

As spring advances the first thunderheads appear inland and the air warms quickly; daytime highs often reach the low 20s°C. Maseru’s markets fill with fresh produce and the city feels livelier, but occasional heavy showers in the afternoon can disrupt cross-country minibuses. Lightweight rain gear and a rain cover for luggage will save you from sudden downpours.

Northern Lowlands (Leribe, Butha-Buthe, Maputsoe)

By early summer thunderstorms start to build over the escarpment, often exploding into heavy afternoon rain that clears by evening. Villages bustle as crops grow and the scent of wet soil fills the air; major downpours can temporarily cut small bridges, so if you’re heading off the main roads allow extra travel time. Lightweight waterproofs and insect repellent are essentials.

Central Foothills and Highlands (Thaba-Tseka, Mohale’s Hoek)

The early summer thunderstorm season arrives with dramatic skies, and the foothills show renewed life as meadows carpet with wildflowers after late rains. Heavy storms can make the Mohale Dam area impassable for hours, and ferries or local crossings may be temporarily suspended. Pack breathable rain gear if you’re walking between rural stops and plan flexible travel days.

High Maloti Mountains (Mokhotlong, Thabana Ntlenyana, Sani Pass, Afriski)

Spring brings dramatic melt: rivers surge as snow recedes and waterfalls roar across the escarpment, making for spectacular photography at Katse and near Sani Top. Trails can be very muddy and slippery, so travel plans should be flexible and extra time allowed for slow crossings. The first wildflowers appear on exposed slopes, and lodges slowly reopen services after the deep winter.

Eastern Highlands and Sehlabathebe (Qacha’s Nek, Sehlabathebe National Park)

Late winter is the slow thaw: peat bogs become saturated and tracks can turn into long greasy stretches that swallow boots. Waterfalls and rivers continue to flow strongly from meltwater, creating dramatic scenes ideal for photographers. Camping here is raw and cold - choose a serviced campsite or lodge instead unless you’re well-prepared for alpine conditions.
