Western Lowlands (Maseru, Mafeteng)

Late summer continues to be warm but rainfall slowly tails off; mornings become fresher and the vegetation is at its greenest. City life in Maseru hums with end-of-year activity and small campsites fill up as Basotho take holiday trips. Bring insect repellent for evenings - mosquitoes are more active during and just after the rains.

Northern Lowlands (Leribe, Butha-Buthe, Maputsoe)

The rains taper through early autumn and the land begins to dry, leaving spectacularly clear skies for trekking to nearby high points. Harvest activity increases and markets are full of fresh produce - a good time to sample local fare. Roads firm up quickly after the rains, improving access to traditional homesteads and cultural sites.

Central Foothills and Highlands (Thaba-Tseka, Mohale’s Hoek)

Autumn brings crisp, sunny days and cooler nights, ideal for long walks on the ridges where views open across the valleys. Temperatures moderate and horse-trekking circuits become reliable - tack shops and guides are available in regional centres. With the dramatic colours of fading grasses, photography is especially atmospheric at dawn and dusk.

High Maloti Mountains (Mokhotlong, Thabana Ntlenyana, Sani Pass, Afriski)

Late summer sees the rainfall easing and the highlands begin to dry; mornings are cool and the views are exceptionally clear after storms clear haze. This is a brilliant period for multi-day treks and for mountain photography as water-levels drop and paths firm up. Book transport and guides early - weekend trails attract local and regional hikers.

Eastern Highlands and Sehlabathebe (Qacha’s Nek, Sehlabathebe National Park)

Midsummer keeps the eastern highlands cool and wet with frequent short storms; fog is common in the mornings around Qacha’s Nek, which can limit long-distance views. The rains make for lush meadows and excellent country drives where fords are passable, though always ask locals about current conditions. Pack a stout rain jacket and expect fewer insect problems due to the altitude.
