Komodo National Park is an Indonesian protected area in the Lesser Sunda Islands, off western Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, established to conserve its terrestrial and marine biodiversity. It is internationally known for its population of Komodo dragons and for rich coral reefs and pelagic marine life.
Close wildlife encounters with Komodo dragons on islands such as Komodo and Rinca, panoramic hilltop viewpoints on Padar Island, and several beaches with unusual pink sand. The surrounding marine areas are popular for snorkeling and diving, with opportunities to see manta rays, reef fish and healthy coral gardens.
The park was designated to conserve the komodo population and its island ecosystems and later recognized by UNESCO for its outstanding universal value. It comprises multiple islands and a large marine area, and visitor access is regulated through permits and guided landings to limit disturbance.
Situated between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores, the park’s principal access point is the port of Labuan Bajo on Flores; boats of varying sizes provide day trips and liveaboard diving itineraries into the park.

How to Get to Komodo National Park #
Komodo National Park is accessed via Labuan Bajo on the western tip of Flores. Fly into Komodo (Labuan Bajo) Airport from Bali/Denpasar or other Indonesian hubs; from Labuan Bajo harbor take a public ferry or charter boat to Komodo Island, Rinca and nearby dive/snorkel sites - boat crossings commonly take around 1.5-3 hours depending on destination and vessel. The main harbor and ticket/charter offices in Labuan Bajo are within a short walk of each other.
Tips for Visiting Komodo National Park #
- Visit during the dry season (roughly April-October) for clearer trekking conditions, better boat access and improved underwater visibility for snorkeling or diving.
- Plan landings at the park's official ranger-led sites (for example the main Komodo and Rinca landing points) and always go with a park ranger-park regulations require rangers during dragon encounters and guided treks.
- To avoid the biggest day‑trip crowds from Labuan Bajo, consider an overnight liveaboard or an early-morning trek to Padar for sunrise; also include less-visited stops such as Pink Beach or smaller islands for quieter snorkeling and wildlife viewing.
