Northern Highlands (Irbid, Ajloun, Jerash)
By now the hills feel decidedly summery: warm, largely dry days in the mid to high twenties and pleasantly cool nights make this an excellent month for trekking. The archaeological sites are comfortably warm without the peak heat of July; Jerash and the background landscapes are lively with local agriculture. Pack sun protection and breathable layers - afternoons can be warm enough for short sleeves but mornings remain fresh.
Central Highlands (Amman, Madaba, Salt)
May is pleasantly warm in Amman: afternoons often sit in the low to mid-twenties while mornings remain cool, perfect for wandering Rainbow Street or the hilltop citadel. Rain is rare and the city moves into its dry season; small traditional restaurants spread tables outside and terraces are enjoyable into the evening. Pack versatile layers for warm days and cooler nights, and expect more domestic tourism as schools near summer break.
Jordan Valley & Dead Sea
By May the valley is hot and dry with daytime temperatures often in the low to mid-thirties, especially near the lowest points of the Dead Sea basin. Shade is scarce and the sun feels intense - short early-morning excursions and indoor pool time at resorts are the usual pattern. Mosquitoes can appear around irrigation channels, so insect repellent is useful for evening walks.
