Northern Highlands (Irbid, Ajloun, Jerash)

A grey, rainy month often dominates the hills around Irbid and Ajloun - daytime highs commonly sit in the low teens while nights can drop near freezing. Heavy Mediterranean frontal systems bring steady rain and the occasional sleet or snow on the highest ridges, so mud and slick tracks make countryside walks harder. Ancient sites such as Jerash are quieter but muddier; bring a warm waterproof jacket and stout boots and expect reduced daylight for sightseeing.

Central Highlands (Amman, Madaba, Salt)

A persistent winter mood hangs over Amman in January - bright, sharp mornings often give way to gray, rainy afternoons, and nights frequently approach or dip below freezing. Occasional snowfall in higher Amman neighborhoods is possible and can briefly disrupt transport; the Citadel and Roman Theatre are atmospheric under low clouds but muddy. Layers, waterproofs and good footwear keep you comfortable while museum visits and cafés are a warmer indoor option.

Jordan Valley & Dead Sea

A steady subtropical calm often pervades the Dead Sea region in January: the air is mild during the day, commonly in the high teens to low twenties, but mornings can be cool. Rainfall is most frequent of the year here between December and February, and heavy downpours can cause wadi flash flooding that intermittently closes low roads. Floating on the Dead Sea is comfortable on bright days; bring a warm layer for breezy evenings.
