How to Get to Faʻaone#
Faaone is on the southeast coast of Tahiti Nui and is reached from Papeete’s Faa’a International Airport (PPT) by road. There is no rail transport on Tahiti; buses, taxis and rental cars are the normal ways to get to and around Faaone.
Faa’a International Airport (PPT): The primary international gateway to Tahiti (Papeete) is Faa’a (PPT). From PPT to Faaone on the southeast coast of Tahiti Nui, travel by car or bus along the coastal road typically takes 25-45 minutes depending on traffic; taxis from PPT to eastern suburbs commonly cost XPF 3,000-5,000 (roughly US$25-45).
Domestic/Inter-island flights: For other Society Islands you may fly or take ferries from Papeete; however Faaone is on Tahiti itself and is reached by road from Papeete rather than by air.
Bus: Tahiti has a public bus network centred on Papeete. Local buses (line numbers and schedules vary) run east along the coastal road and can reach stops near Faaone; fares are modest (hundreds of XPF) and travel time from Papeete is around 30-60 minutes depending on route.
Train: There is no passenger rail on Tahiti; road transport (bus, taxi, rental car) is the standard way to travel around the island.
How to Get Around Faʻaone#
On Tahiti, taxis and rental cars are the most convenient ways to reach coastal villages like Faaone, while the public bus network is the low-cost option. There is no passenger rail-road travel is the norm for island mobility.
- Taxi (XPF 3,000-5,000 (~US$25-45)) - Taxis from Papeete (and PPT) provide a direct and convenient route to Faaone; fares from the airport to eastern suburbs are commonly XPF 3,000-5,000 (~US$25-45) and the trip takes about 25-45 minutes. Confirm approximate fare with the driver or use official airport taxi services.
- Public bus (Low (hundreds of XPF)) - The island bus network serves coastal towns and is the cheapest way to reach Faaone from Papeete. Fares are low (hundreds of XPF); buses take longer than taxis and schedules can be limited on weekends. Check local timetable boards in Papeete or ask your accommodation for the correct line and stop.
- Car hire (XPF/US$ per day (varies)) - Renting a car is the most flexible way to explore Tahiti and reach Faaone at your own pace. Main roads are paved and signage is reasonable; parking in small towns is generally available. A compact rental is sufficient for most visitors outside of rugged interior roads.
- Scooter / motorbike rental (Moderate (XPF/day)) - Scooters and motorbikes are popular for short trips and coastal touring on Tahiti. They are economical and convenient but require caution on busy coastal roads and during wet conditions. Helmets are mandatory and insurers may have age or licence restrictions.
- Bicycle (Low-moderate (XPF/day)) - Cycling along the coastal road is possible for fit riders and offers scenic views, though sections can be exposed and busy with traffic. Hire a bike locally for short rides; avoid long solo rides without preparation. Bring sun protection and water.
- Walking - Faaone’s village area is walkable for short distances, beaches and local amenities. For longer coastal exploration use a vehicle or bicycle; nighttime walking away from the main villages is not recommended without local guidance.
