Tiarei City
Village on Tahiti's east coast
East Tahiti commune offering coastal viewpoints, reef-accessible surf, and local markets—good stops for drivers circling the island and motu excursions.
Why Visit Tiarei?#
Set on Tahiti’s east coast near the Taravao Peninsula, Tiarei appeals to visitors wanting raw island life and sweeping lagoon views. The place is a base for exploring coral-fringed bays and sampling poisson cru, Tahiti’s classic raw fish in coconut milk. Traditional culture also features prominently: watch ʻori Tahiti dance performances and village ceremonies that preserve local customs. It’s quieter than Papeʻete, ideal for travelers seeking coastal calm and cultural encounters.
Best Time to Visit Tiarei#

How to Get to Tiarei#
Tiarei is served from Faa’a International (PPT) on Tahiti; there are no trains. The island ring road links settlements, and local buses or taxis cover most transfers - taxis for speed, buses for budget travel.
Faa’a International Airport (PPT): Faa’a is the main international gateway for Tahiti (Papeete). Tiarei is on the east coast of Tahiti - by road from PPT expect roughly 30-50 minutes depending on the route and traffic. Options are taxis (shorter time, higher cost) or intercity buses/minibuses.
No other major airports: There are no closer international airports; domestic flights to smaller outer islands depart from PPT but are not relevant for reaching Tiarei on Tahiti itself.
Train: There is no passenger rail on Tahiti.
Bus / Minibus / Taxi: Local buses and shared minibuses run around Tahiti’s ring road and link Papeete with coastal towns including Tiarei; they are the most economical option and take 30-60 minutes from Papeete depending on stops. Taxis are faster (about 30-45 minutes) but cost significantly more.
How to Get Around Tiarei#
There is no rail; most travel around Tahiti is by car, taxi or the local bus network. For convenience use a taxi or rental car; use buses for the lowest cost.
- Taxi (XPF 2,500-4,500) - Taxis from Faa’a to Tiarei are door-to-door and take about 30-50 minutes depending on traffic. They are convenient if you have luggage or arrive late; agree the fare before leaving or use a metered service where available.
- Public bus / shared minibus (XPF 200-600) - Local buses run along Tahiti’s coastal ring road and are the cheapest option to reach Tiarei from Papeete. Expect frequent stops which extend travel time; carry small change and check the route with the driver.
- Car hire (XPF 7,000-12,000/day) - Hiring a car is the easiest way to explore Tahiti at your own pace and reach Tiarei and nearby beaches. Roads around the main island are generally in good condition but can be narrow; parking in Papeete is limited.
- Domestic flight (not applicable) - Tiarei is on Tahiti so domestic flights are not used for access - flights from PPT go to other islands, not around Tahiti itself.
- Walking - Tiarei’s village areas and shoreline are pleasant to explore on foot for short distances. Note that services and shops can be spread out, so walking between settlements may be impractical.
