How to Get to Faʼaʼā#

Faa’a is where Tahiti’s international flights arrive - the airport is effectively in the town. Ground connections to Papeete (the capital) are short: taxis, airport shuttles and public buses provide the link for visitors.

By Air

Faa’a International Airport (PPT): Faa’a (Papeete) International Airport is the main airport for Tahiti and French Polynesia. It is located within the commune of Faa’a - you will typically arrive here when flying to Tahiti.

Other islands: Inter-island flights arrive at smaller airports on other Society Islands; travel between islands is by domestic plane or boat, connecting through Papeete where most onward ground transport to Faa’a or Papeete takes place.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no rail network in Tahiti.

Bus / Public shuttle: Local buses (called ‘routières’ or Tahiti buses) and private shuttles connect Faa’a airport area with Papeete and other parts of the island. Airport taxis are available outside the terminal; public buses are cheaper but less frequent. A taxi from Faa’a airport to central Papeete typically takes 10-20 minutes depending on traffic; fares are commonly around 2,000-3,000 XPF to central Papeete.

How to Get Around Faʼaʼā#

Arrival into Tahiti is at Faa’a airport; taxis and shuttles to Papeete are quick and common, while public buses and car hire are good options for budget and independent travellers respectively.

  • Taxi (airport to Papeete) (2,000-3,000 XPF) - Taxis are available outside the terminal and provide direct transfers to hotels and Papeete downtown. They are convenient for first arrivals and luggage; expect a fixed fare range and tip in cash local currency.
  • Public bus / shuttle (150-500 XPF) - Local buses around Tahiti are the cheapest option for travel from the airport to Papeete and neighbourhoods on the island. Buses can be slow and schedules vary; useful for budget travellers with light luggage.
  • Car hire (10,000-18,000 XPF/day) - Renting a car is popular for exploring Tahiti at your own pace - roads around the island are paved and scenic. Book in advance in high season; be aware of narrow mountain roads and limited signage in places.
  • Inter-island flight / ferry (Varies by route) - To reach other Society Islands and outer islands, use domestic airlines or ferries operating from Papeete. Flight and ferry schedules vary seasonally; book inter-island connections ahead of time.
  • Bicycle / scooter rental (1,500-5,000 XPF/day) - Scooters and bicycles are popular for short trips around coastal roads; they provide flexibility but use caution on narrow roads and in wet weather.
  • Walking - Faa’a and nearby Papeete have compact districts that are walkable for short distances - walking is ideal for exploring markets, waterfronts and nearby cafés.

Shopping in Faʼaʼā#

Fa’aʻā itself has a handful of convenience stores and local shops, but major shopping (the municipal market, boutiques and larger stores) is in nearby Papeʻete. For souvenirs, pareos and local crafts head into the capital. Expect limited tourist shopping options within Fa’aʻā itself.
