How to Get to Papeari#
Papeari is on Tahiti’s southern coast and is reached through Faa’a - Tahiti International Airport (PPT) in Papeete. From the airport most travellers continue by rental car, taxi or the limited island bus service to reach Papeari.
Faa’a - Tahiti International Airport (PPT): The main entry point for Tahiti and French Polynesia is PPT near Papeete. From PPT a car or taxi to Papeari on Tahiti’s south coast takes about 30-45 minutes by road; taxi fares are commonly XPF 4,000-6,000 depending on time of day and luggage. Rental cars are available at the airport.

Train: There is no rail network on Tahiti.
Bus: Local buses run from Papeete toward the south and west coast; a public bus to Papeari from Papeete typically takes 40-60 minutes and fares are modest (around XPF 200-300). Services are infrequent compared with urban transit-check schedules in Papeete before relying on buses.
How to Get Around Papeari#
On Tahiti you’ll generally rely on a car or taxi to get to smaller southern villages like Papeari; public buses exist and are cheap but infrequent. Rent a car for full flexibility, use buses for budget travel, and expect short pleasant walks within the village.
- Taxi / Private transfer (XPF 4,000-6,000) - Taxis from PPT are the quickest door-to-door option; expect 30-45 minutes to Papeari and fares typically in the XPF 4,000-6,000 range. Pre-booked transfers can be convenient if arriving late.
- Car rental (XPF 6,000-12,000 per day (varies)) - Renting a car at the airport is the most flexible way to explore Tahiti; Papeari is roughly a 30-45 minute drive from Papeete and roads around the island are well signed. Fuel is relatively expensive compared with continental prices.
- Public bus (XPF 200-300) - The island bus network links Papeete with coastal communities; buses are cheap but slower and less frequent. Plan extra time and check departure times in Papeete-buses are popular with locals and can make many stops.
- Taxi-brousse / Shared shuttle (XPF 800-2,000) - Some guesthouses and tour operators run shared shuttles or ‘taxi-brousse’ style services to coastal villages; these can be a cost-effective compromise between bus and private taxi. Booking in advance is recommended in high season.
