How to Get to Vairao#
Vairao (on Tahiti’s windward/south coast) is reached from Faa’a (PPT) by road. There is no rail-use taxis, car hire or the island’s bus services to get around.
Faa’a International Airport (PPT): Faa’a in Papeete is the main airport for reaching Vairao on Tahiti’s windward coast. Road travel from PPT to Vairao generally takes about 35-60 minutes depending on exact location and traffic; taxis and car hire are common choices.
No other major airports: Access to Vairao is by road from PPT; inter-island flights are not relevant for intra-Tahiti travel.
Train: There is no train service on Tahiti.
Bus / Minibus / Taxi: Local buses and shared minibuses (and private taxis) run along the coastal road that links Papeete with villages such as Vairao. Buses are inexpensive but slower due to many stops; taxis or a hired car are quicker and more practical for luggage or tight schedules.
How to Get Around Vairao#
No rail-Vairao is best accessed from Faa’a (PPT) by taxi or car hire for speed, or by local buses for the tightest budget.
- Taxi (XPF 2,500-4,500) - Taxis are the quickest way from PPT to Vairao and can handle luggage and groups. Expect a roughly 35-60 minute trip depending on traffic and pick-up location; confirm the fare before departure if the meter is not used.
- Public bus / shared minibus (XPF 200-600) - Budget travellers use the local buses that circle Tahiti - they stop frequently and take longer but are very economical. Ask locally for the correct bus that serves Vairao and have small change ready.
- Car hire (XPF 7,000-12,000/day) - Renting a car gives full flexibility to visit beaches and villages along Tahiti’s coast; roads are generally well maintained. Be aware of parking restrictions in Papeete.
- Inter-island ferry (not applicable) - Vairao is on Tahiti itself; ferries are used to reach other islands, not to move around Tahiti.
- Walking - Vairao’s local area is walkable for short distances around the shore and village. Longer excursions between villages are better by vehicle.
