Danau Maninjau is a large volcanic caldera lake in Agam Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The lake occupies a caldera formed by a past volcanic eruption and is noted for its steep rim and broad, water-filled basin.
A paved road runs along the rim and offers multiple viewpoints over the lake; the rim road and surrounding highland villages are popular with visitors for views, photography and outdoor activities. Local boat services operate on the lake and small fisheries and floating cages are part of the local economy.
The lake formed as the result of volcanic processes; local settlements and roads developed around the lake over the 19th and 20th centuries. The site is a regional recreational area and an important freshwater resource for surrounding communities.
Danau Maninjau lies in the highlands of West Sumatra; the nearest larger towns are in the Bukittinggi area to the east and the lake is reached by mountain roads from the Sumatran interior.

How to Get to Danau Maninjau
Danau Maninjau (Lake Maninjau) in West Sumatra is reached by road. The common approach is by car or minivan from Padang (roughly 2-3 hours by road) or from Bukittinggi (about 1-1.5 hours). The route from Bukittinggi/Agam regency descends steeply to the lake with many hairpin turns; there are roadside parking areas and short walks from villages and viewpoints down to the lakeshore. Public minivans/buses run between Padang, Bukittinggi and the towns around the lake for those not driving.
Tips for Visiting Danau Maninjau
- Head to the Puncak Lawang viewpoint around late afternoon for sweeping panoramas and the best sunset light across the caldera lake.
- Drive the scenic rim road rather than taking the shortest route into the valley - stopping at multiple roadside viewpoints gives a much better sense of the lake's scale and traditional villages.
- Include a stop at small lakeside villages to see traditional Minangkabau rumah gadang architecture and local markets; these quieter settlements are where you'll find authentic crafts and food most visitors miss.
- Start your circuit early to avoid coach traffic on the narrow hairpin descent; buses and trucks use the same road and delays mount in the middle of the day.
