Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.

Western Asia & the Middle East (Turkey, Levant - Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Arabian Peninsula - Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Yemen)

Wetter weather becomes widespread across the Mediterranean fringe and Anatolia, with persistent low-pressure systems along Turkey’s western coast and steady rain in Lebanon and northern Israel - archaeological sites can be muddy and some rural roads slippery. The Gulf stays dry and mild, a popular escape for Europeans seeking winter sun. Ski resorts in Turkey and Iran come alive again; pack insulated layers and a reliable waterproof jacket.

Central Asia & the Caspian Steppe (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan)

Cold returns decisively to much of Central Asia, with snow first appearing in the highlands and sharp freezes at night across the steppe; cities along the Silk Road adopt a quieter rhythm. Long-distance coaches and border crossings can operate more slowly in poor conditions, so allow extra travel time. For travelers, this is a budget-friendly shoulder season but with reduced services in rural areas and mountain valleys.

Siberia & the Russian Far East (Yakutia/Sakha, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Kamchatka, Vladivostok and Magadan)

A prolonged, hard winter returns: daylight hours are short, permafrost and frozen rivers dominate the landscape, and conditions can be dangerously cold in Yakutia and the northern regions. Winter festivals continue in some towns around Lake Baikal and in Yakutsk, with unique cultural experiences available for travelers prepared for extreme cold. Ensure expedition-grade clothing and check medical readiness for severe conditions.

The Himalaya & Tibetan Plateau (Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet/Autonomous Region, Sikkim and northern Indian ranges)

Winter sets back into the high Himalaya and the Tibetan Plateau, bringing snow to high passes and significantly reduced accessibility; many remote mountain lodges close for the season. Lower-elevation cultural tours (Kathmandu Valley, Paro) remain possible though chilly by day and cold at night. For serious high-altitude travel, specialized equipment and winter experience are required.

South Asia (India excluding high Himalaya, Pakistan lowlands, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives)

Cool, dry weather persists across most of the subcontinent: northern plains see pleasant daytime temperatures and cold nights in some areas, while southern coasts remain warm and comfortable. The Maldives is at its best for calm seas and diving visibility. This is high season for many travel markets - book well ahead and pack a warm layer for northern evenings.

East Asia (China - coastal and central provinces, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan)

Winter’s approach brings cold snaps to northern China and the Korean peninsula; Hokkaido’s ski resorts come alive with powder and overseas visitors, while Tokyo and Taipei remain relatively mild. The East China Sea can be stormy at times, and ferry services to outlying islands may be affected. Pack insulated layers for the north and a versatile wardrobe for coastal cities where temperatures vary.

Southeast Asia (Mainland: Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar; Maritime: Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Borneo, Timor)

Temperatures are warm and humidity moderate across most of Southeast Asia; Vietnamese and Cambodian cultural sites are very comfortable to explore with fewer rain delays, and diving season peaks in many marine areas. Borneo’s interior remains humid but workable for wildlife viewing. This is a high season for travel - secure flights and lodgings in advance and carry lightweight rain protection just in case.
