Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a Theravada Buddhist temple complex on Doi Suthep mountain overlooking Chiang Mai, famous for its gilded central chedi and panoramic views. It is one of northern Thailand’s most important pilgrimage sites and a major tourist attraction.

The complex includes a plaza, prayer halls, statues and a long naga‑lined staircase that ascends from the lower parking area to the main compound, with an alternative road and funicular-style lift for visitors. The gilded stupa houses relics and is a focal point for religious ceremonies.

The temple was established centuries ago and expanded over time; it is closely associated with the Lanna Kingdom and with Chiang Mai’s religious heritage. The site functions both as an active place of worship and as a public cultural monument.

Doi Suthep temple stands on a forested ridge west of Chiang Mai city in northern Thailand, reachable by a short drive from the city and offering sweeping views back over Chiang Mai and the surrounding valley.

• Access to the temple: A naga-lined stair of around 306 steps leads from the base to the temple complex, though the site can also be reached by road and a cable car for visitors who prefer not to climb.
• Best viewing times: The gilded central chedi and elevated city views are strongest early morning or at sunset when light highlights the stupa and the surrounding Mae Hia valley toward Chiang Mai.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep sits on Doi Suthep mountain above Chiang Mai and is reached by the same mountain road from the city (Huay Kaew Road/route up to Doi Suthep). The temple is about a 30-45 minute drive from central Chiang Mai; regular red songthaews (shared pickup taxis) and private taxis make the ascent from the Old City and popular pickup points.

Visitors arriving by vehicle can use the temple’s parking; to reach the shrine from the lower entrance you can climb the Naga staircase of 306 steps or take the short cable-car ride from the base.

• Arrive before 08:30 to beat the main rush and, if possible, visit on a weekday; the temple is busiest between mid‑morning and late afternoon when tour buses arrive from Chiang Mai.
• Use the official mountain road parking and then ascend the naga staircase for the classic approach; there is also a short tram/service road option if you prefer to skip the steps.
• Respect the temple dress code (shoulders and knees covered) and time your visit to catch the morning chanting or sunset-both offer a less crowded, more atmospheric experience than peak daylight hours.

According to legend, an elephant carrying a Buddhist relic climbed Doi Suthep and lay down to rest at this site in the late 14th century; it was taken as a sign, and a temple was built here to house the relic. The temple remained isolated until a road was cut up the mountain in 1934 by the much-revered monk Khru Ba Sivichai, to whom there is a shrine at the foot of the mountain.

Locals in Chiang Mai say that if you haven’t visited Wat Doi Suthep, you haven’t really visited Chiang Mai. The gleaming stupa on the upper terrace is one of the city’s best-known icons, and Thais make merit by lighting incense and candles, then walking mindfully three times clockwise around it. The temple is especially atmospheric during the Buddhist puja festivals, which usually fall in February, May and July.

Visiting. Reach the temple by climbing the naga-lined staircase of over 300 steps or by taking the funicular railway for 20 baht. Before entering the upper terrace, stroll the lower terrace, where on a clear day there are sweeping views over Chiang Mai and its valley from just over 1,000 metres above sea level, and huge bells that Thais ring for luck. The place is packed all day, but arrive very early in the morning or late in the afternoon and you might give the tour buses the slip.
