About Darapirom Palace Museum#
Housed in a beautifully restored teak palace in Mae Rim, this museum is a must-see for anyone interested in local history or teak architecture. It commemorates the life of Jao Dara Rasamee, born in 1873 as the daughter of King Intra Wichayanon of Chiang Mai. She became the favourite consort of King Chulalongkorn of Siam, and their betrothal led to the merging of the two kingdoms. After the king’s death in 1910, she was permitted to return from Bangkok to her home in northern Thailand, where she lived until her death in 1933.
In 1999 the building was restored by Chulalongkorn University and opened as the Dara Rasamee Palace Museum. It displays images of this striking woman with her waist-length hair, along with period furniture and personal effects, together recreating the mood of a bygone era, one of the most pivotal periods in the history of both Chiang Mai and Siam.
