Ko Samui
Island Thai island resort known for beaches and coconut palms
Ko Samui’s palm-lined beaches, Chaweng nightlife and the 12-metre Big Buddha temple draw sun-seekers and divers; boat trips run to Ang Thong Marine Park and nearby islands.
Ko Samui is an island in the Gulf of Thailand off the east coast of southern Thailand, administratively part of Surat Thani province. It is one of Thailand’s major island resorts, known for sandy beaches, coconut palms and a developed tourism infrastructure.
The island’s principal draws are beach resorts and nightlife along stretches such as Chaweng and Lamai, temple sites including the Big Buddha, and boat trips to nearby island groups. There are also coastal fishing villages, market streets, viewpoints and a network of waterfalls and interior roads linking small villages.
Ko Samui developed as a tourist destination from the late 20th century onward with expansion of hotels, an airport (Samui Airport) and regular ferry connections to the mainland. Tourism now dominates the local economy while traditional activities such as coconut cultivation and fishing continue in parts of the island.
Ko Samui sits in the central Gulf of Thailand, off the southern mainland of Thailand in Surat Thani province. The island’s central town and ferry port is Nathon; the island is accessible by air and regular ferries from mainland piers.
- Ring road distance: A coastal ring road circles the island and is roughly 50 kilometres long, commonly used to access beaches, temples and viewpoints.
- Day trips: Day trips to the nearby Ang Thong Marine Park expose visitors to a 40-plus island archipelago with snorkelling and short hikes to viewpoints.
What to See #
- Chaweng and Lamai Beaches: A long, developed shoreline around the island with major resort beaches including the busy resort strip at Chaweng and the smaller but popular Lamai Beach.
- Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai): A 12-metre seated Buddha statue on a small islet linked to the north coast by a causeway, forming a focal temple complex frequently visited by tourists.
- Fisherman's Village (Bophut): A historic fishing-village area with preserved wooden shop-houses, restaurants and a walking street market popular in the evenings.
- Ang Thong Marine Park: A national marine park of rocky islands, lagoons and limestone cliffs northwest of the island that is commonly visited on day trips; the park comprises 40-plus islands.
- Nathon town and port: The island's main ferry and administrative port, and the island's central town with government services and shops.

Tips for Visiting Ko Samui #
- Visit popular spots like Big Buddha or Chaweng Beach early in the morning to avoid tour-bus crowds and to enjoy calmer sea conditions for photography.
- Arrive to the island by an earlier ferry or flight where possible; peak arrival times create long waits at the piers and add transit time to beach and temple sites.
- Explore quieter north- and east-coast beaches (for example Maenam or Bophut) or inland waterfalls during mid-afternoon when the busiest beaches and town centers are most crowded.
