Chiang Mai Zoo is a major zoological park and aquarium located in Chiang Mai city, northern Thailand, at the lower slopes of Doi Suthep. It combines outdoor animal enclosures with an on-site aquarium and family exhibits.

The site offers a broad mix of animal exhibits arranged in zones and includes a large aquarium as part of the complex; visitors commonly combine animal viewing with the aquarium, playgrounds and landscaped paths. On-site facilities typically include cafés and shaded walkways to accommodate the tropical climate.

The zoo was developed in the later 20th century to serve Chiang Mai and the wider region as a recreational and conservation site, with expansions over time to add aquarium and visitor facilities. It functions as a public zoological collection with educational programming.

Situated within Chiang Mai municipality, the zoo lies west of the city centre near the road that climbs toward Doi Suthep, making it accessible by road from central Chiang Mai and nearby tourist areas.

  • Setting: Located at the foothills of Doi Suthep, giving some enclosures and viewpoints a hillside setting and cooler microclimate than downtown Chiang Mai.

What to See #

  • Aquarium: A large freshwater aquarium facility located on the zoo site that displays regional and some global aquatic species across multiple tanks.
  • Animal exhibits: Enclosures and walkthrough areas organized by animal groups, including primates, large mammals and birds, plus family-oriented exhibits and a children's area.
