Exploring Chiang Mai Zoo
Few foreign visitors think to include the city’s zoo, but for a fun day out, especially with children, it is hard to beat. It covers a huge area to the west of the city at the base of Doi Suthep, and you can get around on a tram or monorail. From humble beginnings as a missionary’s collection of pets, the zoo has expanded rapidly and now houses creatures as varied as koalas, penguins, flamingos, camels and elephants.
The most popular attraction is the giant panda enclosure, which even has a round-the-clock TV channel following the animals. The aquarium boasts one of the longest underwater viewing tunnels in Asia. A visit could easily fill half a day or more, and it is worth checking the zoo’s website for the times of free animal shows. Several cafes and refreshment kiosks are dotted around the grounds.

How to Get to Chiang Mai Zoo
From Chiang Mai City: take Huay Kaew Road (Route 1004) west from the Old City; the zoo is about a 10-15 minute drive (3-4 km) from Tha Phae Gate. Local red songthaew shared taxis run regularly along Huay Kaew Road and can drop at the main entrance. Metered taxis and Grab are widely available.
Tips for Visiting Chiang Mai Zoo
- Buy combo tickets at the main gate if planning to see the pandas and the aquarium - separate queues otherwise.
- Visit early (8:00-10:00) to see the animals before the afternoon heat and crowding; the panda exhibits are busiest midday.
- Take the little train or shuttle inside the grounds if mobility is an issue - the zoo covers a large hillside area.
- Bring local cash for small on-site eateries; many signs are in Thai only.
