Chiang Mai University Art Museum

The Chiang Mai University Art Museum is a university-run art museum located on the Chiang Mai University campus, focused on modern and contemporary art, research and student exhibitions. It presents rotating shows, faculty collections and educational programming connected to the university’s art departments.

Galleries are used for temporary exhibitions, lectures and student displays rather than a single permanent encyclopedic collection, so offerings change regularly. The museum serves both the campus community and visiting public interested in contemporary northern Thai art practices.

The museum building sits within the Chiang Mai University campus in the Suthep area, about 4 km northwest of Chiang Mai’s old city center, set among university grounds and sports facilities.

An annual highlight is an outdoor concert of traditional Lanna folk music, held on the grass among mature trees and classic Lanna teak houses. Profits from sales of artwork go towards providing art and research materials for talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The 200-seat theatre is available for hire to local cultural organisations, hosting shows such as an annual performance by a local Russian ballet school and a traditional dance presentation by visiting students from the Philippines. The Chiang Mai University Art Museum is on the Chiang Mai University (CMU) campus near Suthep Road (west of the Old City).
