Like Wat Analayo, Champa Thong Waterfall is quite a distance from town and somewhat tricky to find, but the effort is well rewarded with some genuinely picturesque views.
The falls lie within Doi Luang National Park, which covers more than 1,000 square kilometres and straddles the borders of Phayao, Chiang Rai and Lampang. The waterfall itself is tall and framed by lush vegetation, and it is a favourite haunt of butterflies and several bird species, making it a fine spot to settle in for a picnic. As it sits just off the road from Phayao to Chiang Rai, it also makes an easy diversion for travellers heading that way.
