Fugloy

Fugloy is a small, remote island in the Faroe Islands archipelago, administratively part of the Norðoyar region. Its name translates to “Bird Island,” reflecting the importance of seabirds to the local environment.

The island has two tiny settlements and a very small resident population; houses cluster around sheltered coves with steep cliffs dominating much of the coastline. Visitors come for birdwatching, rugged coastal scenery and a sense of remoteness.

Historically the island has been sparsely inhabited with traditional Faroese livelihoods such as fishing and seabird harvesting. Modern services are limited and life on the island remains closely tied to seasonal weather and ferry connections.

Geographically Fugloy lies to the northeast of the main Faroes group and is one of the easternmost islands, with a landscape of cliffs, narrow valleys and coastal stacks.

• Wildlife highlight: Name literally means 'Bird Island' in the local language; the island is noted for seabird cliffs and nesting colonies, which attract birdwatchers in season.

What to See #

• Kirkja: The village of Kirkja sits on the island's western side and is one of two small settlements with a handful of houses and a historic church.
• Hattarvík: The settlement of Hattarvík is located on the eastern side and is the island's other inhabited locality, reachable by footpaths and local boat services when weather permits.
