How to Get to Kunoy#
Kunoy (Faroe Islands) is reached via Vágar Airport (FAE); onward travel is by road and public bus or by rental car. There are no trains in the Faroes-public buses and ferries/tunnels link the islands, and the Norðoyar/Klaksvík area is the usual staging point for Kunoy.
Vágar Airport (FAE): Vágar is the Faroe Islands’ only airport and the usual entry point for Kunoy. From Vágar you can continue by rental car or public bus to the Norðoyar region (Klaksvík), which is the nearest larger town to Kunoy-journey times are typically around 1-2 hours depending on connections and route. Taxis are available at the airport but can be expensive for the full cross‑island journey.
(No other major airports): There are no other regular international airports serving Kunoy; all scheduled international flights arrive at Vágar.
Train: There are no rail services in the Faroe Islands.
Bus / Ferry: Public transport is operated locally (buses and inter-island ferries/tunnels). Buses connect Vágar, Tórshavn and the Norðoyar region (including Klaksvík), and from Klaksvík you can reach Kunoy by local road/tunnel or a short boat transfer depending on exact locality. Timetables vary seasonally; fares on inter‑island bus services are modest but check the Strandfaraskip Landsins (public operator) schedules for precise times and prices.
How to Get Around Kunoy#
There are no rail links-Vágar Airport is the entry point and onward travel is by car, taxi, bus, or occasional ferries. For full flexibility in the Faroe Islands (and to reach Kunoy easily) a rental car is strongly recommended; public buses and boats work if you plan around timetables.
- Car (rental / drive) (DKK 400-900/day (approx.)) - Renting a car at Vágar gives the most flexibility to reach Kunoy and explore Norðoyar; drives are scenic and roads well maintained but can be narrow. Expect drive times to Klaksvík and the Norðoyar islands around 1-2 hours depending on route; winter weather can slow journeys. Car hire is the simplest option if you need to reach remote spots on a flexible schedule.
- Taxi (DKK 300-1200 (one‑way, long transfers)) - Taxis are available at Vágar but are expensive for cross‑island travel-useful for short hops or when buses aren’t operating. Agree fares or use metered rates and note that long transfers (airport→Klaksvík/Kunoy) can be costly.
- Bus / inter-island public transport (DKK 30-150 (typical single fares, variable)) - Public buses and inter-island connections are run by the national operator (check current timetables). Buses link Vágar, Tórshavn and Norðoyar (Klaksvík); from Klaksvík local services or short boat links reach Kunoy. Services are generally reliable but less frequent than in larger countries-plan connections carefully.
- Ferry / boat (DKK 30-120 (depends on route)) - Short boat links operate between some islands and can be the only direct route to certain settlements depending on the schedule and season. Ferry timings are seasonal and may be limited in winter-consult the public operator’s timetable before planning.
- Bicycle (DKK 80-250/day (rental, if available)) - Cycling is feasible for experienced riders on good weather days; hills and wind make some routes challenging. Bring windproof clothing and plan for limited rental availability outside major towns.
- Walking - Villages on Kunoy are compact and easy to explore on foot; many coastal and mountain trails offer great walks but can be exposed to rapidly changing weather. Always check local forecasts and wear appropriate gear.
