Otres Beach

Otres Beach is a coastal beach area on Cambodia’s southern shoreline near Sihanoukville, noted for a long sandy shoreline and a lower-density, relaxed resort character. The beach has become a popular alternative to the busier central Sihanoukville beaches.

The shoreline is commonly described in two sections, Otres 1 and Otres 2, with a mix of small guesthouses, beachfront restaurants and simple bungalows. The beach offers swimming, sunset views across the Gulf of Thailand and a range of small-scale tourist amenities rather than high-rise development.

Once a local fishing coastline, Otres developed as a tourism area in the 2000s and 2010s with low-rise guesthouses and beach bars replacing or supplementing the traditional village economy. Development has remained more restrained here than in central Sihanoukville.

Otres sits on the Gulf of Thailand, on Cambodia’s southern coast near the port town of Sihanoukville; the beach is located roughly 12-15 km south of central Sihanoukville by road.

What to See#

• Otres 1 and Otres 2: A roughly 3-kilometre stretch of coastline divided informally into two principal sectors known locally as Otres 1 and Otres 2, each with beachside bungalows, bars and low-rise accommodation.

Otres offers a strikingly natural contrast to its busier, more developed neighbour to the north, Ochheuteal Beach. There is nothing resembling a town here: along the northern stretch of the roughly 3-km beach, a dozen or so funky, thatch-roofed bungalows and restaurants sit between a bumpy dirt track and the sea, with no ATMs, shops or souvenir stalls.

Many of the establishments toward the centre of the beach were bulldozed by developers, but those that remain at the northern end still offer cheap rooms, tasty inexpensive food and laid-back service. Change is coming in the form of an upgraded road, a new beachfront path and a handful of higher-quality guesthouses built to fit the mood, yet Otres remains a relaxed, low-key alternative just a ten-minute ride from Serendipity Beach but a world away in feel.

Otres Beach is on the southern coast of Sihanoukville province and lies several kilometres south of Sihanoukville town centre. It is commonly reached by tuk‑tuk or taxi from Sihanoukville (roughly a 15-30 minute drive depending on exact resort location and traffic; distance is typically around 8-12 km). From the main Sihanoukville bus or ferry terminals hire local transport to reach the beachfront; the beach areas are reached on foot from the road once dropped near the resorts.

• Head to Otres in late afternoon to enjoy the sunset from the sand-Otres 2 (the quieter, more laid-back stretch) is best if you want fewer beach bars and calmer water.
• If you prefer a livelier scene with more restaurants and services, stay closer to the first stretch (Otres 1); for a quieter walk keep going south past the main cluster where the beach thins out and local fishing activity is visible.
• Be aware that conditions change with the season: in the monsoon months swimming and some beachfront businesses can be limited, whereas the dry season offers the fullest set of beachfront amenities.
