Independence Beach takes its name from the Independence Hotel, built on the beach’s northern headland in the decade after Cambodian independence and completed in 1960, the year the port and town were founded. It is a tree-lined stretch of soft, silvery-white sand with gentle water.
The beach is a good choice for those after a long walk in relative solitude. Several hotels sit near the southern end, but the northernmost portion around the Independence Hotel has no public access. Walking from south to north you have your pick of shady trees to set up beneath and enjoy a quiet day of sunbathing and swimming, largely undisturbed by hawkers or crowds.
