Muscat & the Batinah Coast (Muscat, Sohar, Barka)

Late-summer in September begins a gentle easing: humidity wanes, and daytime highs fall back into the low-to-mid 30s°C, making sightseeing more tolerable. The sea remains warm and favorable for boat trips, and weekend road trips to Quriyat or Barka feel less punishing. Keep a light jumper for coastal evenings which can be breezy.

Musandam Peninsula (Khasab, Dibba, fjords & dhow cruises)

September starts to cool a touch and the sea remains warm and calm enough for extended snorkeling; daytime highs often fall back into the high 20s°C. The shoulder season reduces day-trip congestion and overwater visibility is typically good. Plan longer excursions into the fjords and bring layered clothing for cooler dawns.

Hajar Mountains & highlands (Jebel Akhdar, Jebel Shams, Nizwa)

September afternoons in the Hajar begin to moderate, especially at elevation where daytime highs slip back into the low 20s°C and trekking conditions improve. Wadi pools can still retain warm water from summer and are good for a post-hike dip; some remote tracks reopen after summer maintenance. Bring a light jacket for shady gorges where wind funnels and cools the air.

Interior Desert & Wahiba Sands (Sharqiyah Sands, desert wadis, Ras al Hadd approaches)

September mornings are noticeably cooler and the desert becomes more bearable for day trips; highs often slip into the low 30s°C and evenings turn comfortably warm. Wadi pools may still be warm enough for a dip in sheltered spots and the season’s first storms can occur later in the month. Resume longer drives but remain mindful of flash-flood risk in narrow wadis.

Dhofar & Salalah Region (Salalah, Mirbat, khareef monsoon coast)

Khareef tapering in September leaves lingering mist and green hillsides early in the month, with conditions gradually drying and warming toward the end of the month. Waterfalls and seasonal pools remain active, and roads into the hinterland can be muddy. Bring layered clothing for changeable conditions and book accommodation in Salalah early if visiting the tail end of the khareef.
