Muscat & the Batinah Coast (Muscat, Sohar, Barka)
Peak summer in July turns the coast very hot and humid, with daytime highs frequently at 40°C or slightly lower nearer the sea where humidity makes it feel hotter. Nights remain warm and air conditioning is essential; day trips to Wahiba Sands or inland forts are uncomfortable and best avoided. Plan early starts, frequent water breaks, and accept that mornings and evenings are the main outdoor windows.
Musandam Peninsula (Khasab, Dibba, fjords & dhow cruises)
July remains hot with daytime temperatures in the low-to-mid 30s°C and strong sun on exposed decks; afternoons are best for siestas in shaded harbors. Diving and snorkeling can be very good early and late in the day, though midday boat crossings are warm. Arrange tours in the morning and carry a lightweight windbreaker for choppy returns.
Hajar Mountains & highlands (Jebel Akhdar, Jebel Shams, Nizwa)
Dry heat increasingly dominates in July with valley floors very hot; however, higher routes on Jebel Shams remain markedly cooler, making alpine-style dawn treks rewarding. Cloud build-up is uncommon but when it occurs can deliver short, intense showers on steep slopes that cause rapid runoff. Bring sun protection, plenty of fluids, and a hat for exposed stretches.
Interior Desert & Wahiba Sands (Sharqiyah Sands, desert wadis, Ras al Hadd approaches)
July is peak desert summer - extreme daytime heat and intense sun make midday activity unwise, and sand surfaces can become blistering. Nights are warm and sleep can be broken by humidity in some low basins; vehicle air conditioning is essential. Book guided trips with experienced drivers and restrict outdoor activities to early morning and late evening.
Dhofar & Salalah Region (Salalah, Mirbat, khareef monsoon coast)
Full khareef conditions dominate July with persistent fog, light rain and cool temperatures that make Salalah feel like a temperate hill station - daytime highs often in the low 20s°C. The countryside turns lush, rivers and waterfalls swell, and parks like Wadi Darbat are lively; outdoor activities shift to walking in mist or visiting the frankincense sites. Bring a waterproof jacket and expect reduced sea visibility for diving.
